Ancient people believed the written word was magic because written words brought knowledge, and with knowledge comes power. Individual written words were considered tiny spells, which later became known as “spelling.”
Go ahead, ma’am me
The words ma’am and sir are terms of respect. By rejecting the word, you imply that you don’t deserve that level of respect. Even when delivered in a snide or condescending tone, it still puts you in the position of authority.
